How to find a life coach that's right for you

Wikipedia has this to say about personal/life coaching:

Personal coaching is a process which is designed and defined in a relationship agreement between a client and a coach. It is based on the client's expressed interests, goals and objectives. A professional coach may use inquiry, reflection, requests and discussion to help clients identify personal and/or business and/or relationship goals, and develop action plans intended to achieve those goals. The client takes action, and the coach may assist, but never leads or does more than the client.

Slightly dry I know, but here is that "take out" as I see it. A life coach will:
  • help you identify your goals;
  • help you develop an action plan to achieve those goals;
  • use a range of techniques to get there - not telling you but drawing it out of you; and
  • assist you take action but won't do it for you.

Tips for choosing a life coach . . .

As you will enter an important relationship with your life coach its important you take your time to make a choice:

  1. Try before you buy: some coaches offer a free introductory session which is a great way to work out if there is a "fit".
  2. Ask for qualifications: most coaches will have studied or be certified.
  3. Ask about the approach, methods and techniques: for instance would they expect you to do "homework"?
  4. Location: some coaches offer a place for you to come for your sessions, others will come to you, others may coach by phone/email/skype/zoom. What's important to you?
